I am currently investigating live personal webcams attached to personal
homepages. If you have a live personal webcam I'd be delighted
to chat with you about your experiences.

Webcams and Male Identity Practices
This research follows on from my study of personal home pages on the
Web. It is a study of the use of live video cameras (webcams) in association
with personal home pages. Such cameras serve to shift personal space to
public space even more than personal home pages do. The primary focus of
the current study is on the self-presentation strategies of male webcam users
(although the word 'strategies' makes identity practices sound too conscious). The
study excludes 'spycams' and focuses on online cameras set up by those who
appear on them. It seeks to describe primarily the camera-users' framing of
the experience, but also, where the cameras are linked to online chat-systems,
describes the reactions of 'visitors'. Participant observation, online interviews
and e-mail dialogues are the primary means of gathering data and some of the sites
are being studied in detail over time. The implications of this use of
new technologies for the development of adolescent identities will be
explored.
